Part 12/14:
City Hall Plaza Tunnel (1898): An integral part of Boston’s first subway, sealed in the 1960s, but still holding intact brick vaults and the white Standback line that once guided streetcars beneath City Hall Plaza.
Pleasant Street Portal: Concealed beneath a neighborhood park, this portal once served the South End subway and still hides an underground two-track tunnel behind a concrete wall at Boilston station.
Harvard Station Lower Level: The old trolley yard and platforms remain sealed but visible from passing trains, a ghostly reminder of when Harvard Square functioned as both a station and streetcar hub.
Canal Street Incline: Once a major link to the North Station elevated lines, now demolished, but its route remains in architectural and engineering records.
