In subsequent interviews, Leslie Headlin continued to deny the overtly queer labeling of her characters, claiming it’s “reductive” to insist they are lesbians and that their sexuality is incidental to the plot. She tried to frame the space witches’ society as simply a matriarchal, non-male community where same-sex attraction is a “natural” outcome—more of a natural evolution than an explicit political statement.
