Velma was heavily criticized for numerous reasons, from its departure in tone to its character choices. The series, created by Mindy Kaling, was met with immediate backlash due to its race swaps, character reboots, and what many viewers perceived as blatant propaganda. Notably, the character of Shaggy was race-swapped, and Scooby-Doo itself was absent from the series altogether, which angered many long-time fans.
The reception was brutal: the show scored a dismal 7% on Rotten Tomatoes and an even more alarming 1.6 on IMDb. Such scores are rare and rank among the lowest in IMDb history. Critics and fans alike deemed it a poorly executed reboot that betrayed the charm of the original Scooby-Doo franchise.
