Beyond the numbers, the film’s content and intent drew widespread criticism. Marketed as satire, many argued it failed to deliver on its promise, instead seeming to serve as a vehicle for virtue signaling that alienated viewers across racial lines. The narrative purportedly aimed to make white audiences uncomfortable, but in doing so, it seemed to have alienated everyone, including Black viewers. The overwhelming consensus was that the film did little to provide genuine social insight and instead reinforced negative stereotypes about Hollywood’s approach to race-related topics.
