Their original idea was to explore the dawn of the Jedi, which closely aligns with the Dawn of the Jedi comic series in the expanded universe—whose title and premise they were heavily inspired by, but which Lucasfilm now officially considers non-canonical. This theft of ideas highlights a pattern of the studio leaning on existing lore from the expanded universe while being hesitant to develop wholly original concepts.
The creators express frustration about being essentially shut out from doing a story that was clearly in their wheelhouse. They even lampooned Ryan Johnson's The Last Jedi title, lamenting how it dismissed the potential of exploring the Jedi’s origins more deeply.
