Recently, Selena Gomez found herself in the spotlight following her response to the deportation of illegal immigrants from the United States, particularly those from Mexico. The singer, who has long identified herself as a "third-generation Mexican-American," took to Instagram to post a video of herself crying, expressing sorrow over children and families being affected by immigration enforcement.
In the video, Gomez said, “All my people are getting attacked, the children—they don't understand. I'm so sorry. I wish I could do something, but I can't. I don't know what to do.” Her emotional display appeared to be an attempt to show empathy and solidarity with those being deported.
