The Western Ukrainian movement, particularly in Galicia, originated within the Austro-Hungarian Empire, where regions sought greater autonomy amid a mosaic of nationalities. Many Western Ukrainians considered themselves distinct from their eastern counterparts, who had historically been more influenced by Russian culture and Orthodox Christianity. The Western regions aimed to forge their own national identity, often in opposition to Poland and Russia.
