The collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and subsequent Soviet and Polish influences further entrenched these divisions. Western Ukraine, for example, had been part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which fostered a distinctive Ukrainian identity separate from the Russian-influenced east. Nonetheless, the Soviet Union absorbed Western Ukraine in 1939, further complicating the fabric of Ukrainian national identity.
