The Drive for Speed and Scale
Starbucks pioneered drive-thrus in 1994, and by 2014, about a third of US stores featured them, accounting for roughly 45% of operating profit. Mobile ordering launched in 2015 further accelerated service, with nearly a quarter of US transactions happening via app by 2021.
