According to Brian Tucker, an executive producer and writer for "Secret Invasion," her demise was purely a storytelling device aimed at emphasizing the scale and seriousness of the Skrull threat.
Tucker explained:
"One of the most important decisions we had to make early on was to really illustrate the scale and reality of the danger that the Skrulls pose to humans. We couldn’t allow all characters to survive because this is a bloody, brutal contest for the planet."
