The current global landscape positions 33 countries at different phases of CBDC development—ranging from research to pilot programs—and 17 countries have already launched pilot programs successfully. Notable nations leading the charge include China, India, Russia, South Africa, and Australia. Countries such as the United States, Canada, Brazil, Japan, and Indonesia are actively exploring or testing digital currencies but have not yet transitioned to full deployment.
Africa and other regions lag behind
While the Asia-Pacific and European regions are moving swiftly, Africa and parts of Middle Asia and South America remain relatively behind on this trajectory, with some countries still in early research phases or yet to commence formal development.
