Sources indicate that these funds were misappropriated not only for personal luxury—such as buying houses, luxury cars, and investing in real estate in Turkey and Kenya—but also possibly funneled overseas. There are allegations that some of the illicit money was sent back to Somalia, where certain groups linked to terrorism, notably al-Shabaab, may have received funding. Although firm evidence remains under investigation, U.S. Treasury officials have expressed concern about potential links to terrorist organizations.
