Federal prosecutors have reported that 78 out of 86 charged individuals are Somali, with over 59 having been convicted so far. The total amount stolen from taxpayers is estimated at $1 billion. The fraudulent schemes include:
Feeding programs: Nonprofits claiming to provide meals to tens of thousands of children during the pandemic, most of which were never delivered. The funds were diverted for personal use.
Homelessness aid: Numerous organizations billed for services meant to assist individuals at risk of homelessness, though many of these services were never rendered.
