The hand's mechanics are notably advanced. It boasts 24 degrees of freedom—allowing movements like flexion, abduction, and opposition. The design relies on both tendons and ligaments: some tendons are actively controlled by actuators, while others leverage springs or elastic elements for return movements.
However, the design currently lacks full control over all movements; for example, some tendons responsible for extension are passive, and the hand relies on ligaments for return, which may limit precision. Elon Musk has hinted that future iterations (possibly Gen 3) will include more actuators to enhance dexterity, including active extensors and more tendon control.
