Another major factor contributing to Haunted Mansion’s failure is its steep production budget. Reportedly costing $160 million, the film needed an enormous box office haul to break even. This high expenditure made its disappointing opening even more damaging, as the return on investment now appears bleak.
Adding to the film’s challenges is the perceived lack of star power. Unlike hits driven by popular celebrities, Haunted Mansion relies less on star appeal and more on franchise recognition. Yet, the studio’s choice to eschew prominent promotional appearances by stars appears to have fallen flat. The director himself has drawn criticism, especially after making controversial statements about casting and cultural representation.
