Removing agency from young people — especially young men who are in critical phases of identity formation — can lead to harmful emotional responses. Without a sense of control or the belief that their actions can effect change, many young men experience anger. Yet, this anger is often misplaced or unchanneled, as they aren’t given clear pathways or empowering strategies to channel their frustrations into constructive avenues. Instead, they are left bewildered, unsure of where to channel their energy or how to influence their circumstances.
