The disappointments aren't confined solely to animation. Disney’s other flagship franchises, such as Marvel, Star Wars, and Indiana Jones, continue to underperform relative to expectations. While "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" managed to break even—an achievement in current circumstances—most other Disney properties have failed to generate enthusiasm or substantial box office returns.
The exception remains "Avatar: The Way of Water," a film produced under James Cameron that Disney inherited from Fox. It’s one of the rare Disney titles that has succeeded in large-scale box office numbers, reflecting how much of Disney’s recent release slate underwhelms audiences and critics alike.
