The promotional material and early interviews for The Acolyte have not helped to quell the controversy. Headland’s references to drag queens, her fashion show-style entrances, and her campy tone have been widely criticized as out of touch with traditional Star Wars fans. The series' promotion—characterized by cringe-worthy intros and a lack of clarity about the series’ direction—has resulted in a massive backlash, including a significant ratio of dislikes to likes on social media posts.
Furthermore, the emphasis on identity over storytelling has led many fans to worry that The Acolyte will be a political and cultural sermon rather than a compelling addition to the Star Wars universe.
