Elizabeth Banks’ Attempt to Rewrite the Narrative
Director Elizabeth Banks has since come forward to comment on the film's poor performance, claiming she regrets how it was marketed. Banks stated she wished the movie hadn't been presented as “just for girls,” asserting that she didn't intend for it to be a feminist statement but simply an action movie. She expressed that there was a disconnect with the marketing, noting that, in Hollywood, women’s projects often become viewed through a political or feminist lens.
Banks also claimed that her inability to make a more traditional action movie was due to Hollywood’s male-dominated industry, suggesting she only secured the opportunity because she was a female director, working within a “confine” she couldn't otherwise break free from.
