The announcement came mere days after Depp lost a libel lawsuit against The Sun, a UK tabloid that labeled him a "wife-beater." This legal loss appeared to serve as the catalyst for Warner Brothers' decision to remove Depp from the franchise. Warner Brothers publicly thanked Depp for his contributions but announced that the role of Grindelwald would be recast, with the third film still scheduled for release in summer 2022.
