Ridley revealed that director J.J. Abrams initially pitched her the film with Palpatine as her grandfather, but shortly afterward, that storyline was left in limbo, with producers unsure of the canonical path. Ridley states:
"Even when we were filming, I wasn't sure what the answer was going to be."
