What Kennedy conveniently omits is that George Lucas himself acknowledged the importance of the Expanded Universe as a resource for storytelling. When Bob Iger, Disney's CEO at the time of acquiring Lucasfilm, discussed the universe, he stated:
"The Star Wars universe has more than 17,000 characters, inhabited several thousand planets, and spans twenty thousand years."
