According to a report compiled by GLAAD—a prominent LGBTQ+ advocacy organization—the number of characters representing the LGBTQ+ community has seen a noticeable decrease. Although 2024 initially showed a slight uptick in such characters (from 468 to 489 across various platforms), that growth was dampened by cancellations and series endings. Over 41% of these characters are no longer appearing due to show cancellations or format changes like limited series, which means that nearly half the representation is essentially evaporating.
