The subsequent films—The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker—did little to salvage the franchise’s integrity. The Last Jedi shattered expectations by subverting familiar characters, portraying Luke Skywalker as a disillusioned recluse, and dismissing established lore. Director Rian Johnson appeared disinterested in respecting the story’s origins, instead opting for shock value and controversy. Kennedy's passive stance—indeed, her blatant support of these creative choices—further compounded fan outrage.
