The Malaysian Solidarity Convention comprised influential leaders—Chong Yu and Aniwi, among others—who openly supported the People’s Action Party (PAP) and its policies. By choosing independence and severing ties with Malaysia, Singapore’s leadership felt a deep sense of betrayal. Lee expressed concern that by pulling out of Malaysia, Singapore was abandoning its Malaysian friends to the mercy of the Altras (referring to opposition groups or possibly internal political foes). He lamented that this action might be viewed by Malaysia as a betrayal, a sentiment that added emotional weight to the already difficult process of separation.
