Part 2/11:
New World, inaugurated around 1912, was Singapore’s first amusement park, situated between Sarangoon Road, Jalamasa, Kitchener Road, and Patane Road. Its reconstructed gate, though not the original, hints at the grandeur it once exhibited, hosting a labyrinth of stalls, fairgrounds, and entertainment structures that drew crowds from all walks of life.
Great World, built along the Singapore River (bounded by Kim Seng Road, River Valley Road, and Zion Road), catered to the high society and literati. It featured landscaped European-style gardens, an ice rink, a zoo, and a racecourse—destined for the affluent and distinguished. The old gates and remnants of its architecture serve as silent witnesses to its past elegance.
