In Mongolia, mass protests in 2025 focused on corruption scandals involving state-owned resources, especially the illegal export of coal to China. Protesters utilized social media hashtags like “It’s Easy to Resign,” criticizing the prime minister’s failure to address corruption. Viral images of politicians’ lavish lifestyles highlighted the deepening inequality, particularly between wealthy elites and struggling youth living in cold, traditional gers (tents).
This activism proved so intense that it resulted in the resignation of key officials and the dissolution of government. Young Mongolians, growing up amidst resource wealth but facing stagnant wages and economic disparity, have demanded transparency and justice, expressing their disillusionment with decades of elite rule.
