For instance, some towns rent out abandoned homes at subsidized rates—sometimes as low as 17 USD per night during promotional periods—aiming to attract tourists and seasonal residents. Others are repurposing old buildings, such as former schools, into co-working spaces or accommodation facilities.
The Japanese government also offers financial incentives, including subsidies up to 1.8 million yen (around $13,000 USD) for families relocating to rural areas. These measures are part of a broader strategy to increase local populations, stimulate local economies, and prevent the total disappearance of once-thriving communities.
