The village’s signature product, shrimp paste, holds a special place in its cultural identity. Fishermen harvest shrimp from the waters around Tai O and produce this aromatic, slightly salty delicacy. Interestingly, the decision to locate the shrimp paste production here was strategic: to keep the pungent aroma away from Hong Kong’s city center, allowing the village to capitalize on its natural resources and tradition.
