Part 8/12:
The Reality of Women’s Football: Challenges and Aspirations
Danelle’s story also shines a light on the broader issues facing women’s football worldwide. In Dortmund, the women’s team is relatively young, established only three years ago, and still striving toward professionalism. Currently, they compete in the fifth tier of German women’s football—a step above semi-professional—aiming to climb up the ranks to eventually compete in the Bundesliga, Germany’s top league.
The lack of professional opportunities remains a core challenge. Danelle explains that while the men’s team operates as a fully professional outfit, her team is still fighting for recognition, fair pay, and respect. Many players juggle full-time jobs, studies, and training, advocating for the sport’s growth and legitimacy.
