This is made possible because of India’s abundant sunshine and the low cost of solar energy, which is currently the cheapest form of power in the country. The cost to run a light bulb for ten hours in India is roughly 7 rupees (about 7 US cents), whereas solar power reduces this to just 2 rupees (about 2 US cents). Such affordability accelerates the growth of rooftop solar installations across urban India, especially in affluent neighborhoods and collective solar colonies where residents pool resources for larger, communal solar projects.
