Part 5/14:
One pragmatic approach Indonesia is adopting is co-firing—integrating biomass with coal in existing power plants. In Indramayu, a coal-fired power plant has been employing co-firing for three years now, blending 1-3% biomass, such as rice husks and forestry residue. This mixture reduces carbon and sulfur oxide emissions and serves as a transitional measure toward cleaner energy.
In 2023, approximately 1 million tons of biomass were used across 43 PLN coal plants—over double the amount from the previous year. The government has set a target to expand co-firing to another 52 coal plants by 2025.
