Large-scale plantations to produce biomass, especially wood, often threaten existing forests, leading to loss of biodiversity and reduced natural carbon sequestration capacity. Moreover, monoculture plantations—focusing on fast-growing tree species—do not replicate the carbon absorption efficiency of natural rainforests, which contain diverse flora and support rich ecosystems. As such, the tradeoff between biomass development and forest conservation remains highly contentious.
