Dwayne Johnson’s role is used primarily for exposition—he often explains ridiculous plot points with deadpan humor. While some might see this as a weakness, it actually fits the film’s tone, which does not take itself too seriously. The chemistry between Johnson and Evans isn’t electrifying but works well enough to keep the story moving.
Interestingly, the film makes a conscious decision not to redeem the villain Gilla, which many holiday movies tend to do with their antagonists. Instead, Gilla remains a pure villain, emphasizing the chaos and darkness that still exist during Christmas, making the eventual victory even sweeter.
