The United States has made strides to address this daunting issue, with federal initiatives allocating billions of dollars towards plugging orphaned wells. The bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, for example, has provided over $4.7 billion to plug wells nationwide, and this effort has led to the sealing of about 6,000 wells over the past year. Still, the scale of the problem is vast, and many wells remain unaddressed.
