Traditional radar systems are designed to detect water vapor clouds, making clear air turbulence particularly elusive. As a result, pilots often have little warning before encountering sudden rough patches.
However, promising new technologies are on the horizon. One such innovation is LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging)—a laser-based system similar to auto-driving vehicle sensors—that could detect changes in air molecules at high altitudes and provide early warnings for turbulence.
