Japan’s geothermal legacy dates back centuries, with the natural phenomenon of hot springs, or onsen, playing a prominent role in Japanese culture and economy. The word Gio (Earth) combined with thermos (hot) signifies the geothermal heat harnessed through these springs, which emerge as streams of scalding water from beneath the earth's surface. Heated by volcanic magma, these subterranean reservoirs have been utilized for bathing, relaxation, and healing.
Today, Japan boasts over 25,000 onsen establishments, generating an industry worth approximately $9 billion USD and attracting around 78 million visitors in 2019. These hot springs are not only cultural treasures but also vital to local economies, especially in rural towns and regions with volcanic activity.
