Indonesia, particularly its Aceh province at the northern tip of Sumatra, has been a de facto refuge for the Rohingya since 2013. Despite not being a signatory to the UN Refugee Convention, Indonesia has provided shelter out of humanitarian concern. Due to ongoing conflict, widespread fighting, and the lack of safe pathways for return in Myanmar, the number of Rohingya arrivals has surged, with over 2,000 individuals arriving in 2023 alone. Most reside in makeshift camps along the beaches, with agencies like UNHCR and the International Organization for Migration offering protection and basic services.
