Verifiles, a Manila-based nonprofit dedicated to fact-checking, documented the extent of this digital misinformation. Over the course of 2022, they debunked 336 viral social media posts, with more than half of these posts—or 52%—specifically distorting facts related to Ferdinand Marcos Sr., the former dictator whose rule left a lasting impact on Philippine history. These distortions aimed to portray the Marcos era as a "golden age," dismissing human rights abuses and corruption that characterized the dictatorship period.
