Throughout lessons, Dian observed her mother trying to engage with her classmates, but she noted that her mother seemed a bit awkward and less forthcoming, perhaps due to the natural distance between parent and child in social settings. Dian described the difficulty her mother faced in breaking out of the parent role to act as a friend, which made her feel somewhat uncomfortable. She expressed a desire for her mother to treat her more like a peer rather than just a parent figure.
