On February 1, 2021, Myanmar’s military, known as the Tatmadaw, overthrew the democratically elected government of the National League for Democracy (NLD), detaining leader Aung San Suu Kyi. This move sparked widespread protests and a brutal crackdown on dissent. Young people, students, and civil society members took to the streets, often armed, to oppose the coup—facing lethal force from the military. By the end of 2022, an estimated 16,000 individuals had been detained and over 2,300 killed, according to local NGOs.
