ASEAN’s Attempt at Mediation and Its Limited Impact
In an effort to end the violence, ASEAN—a regional bloc of Southeast Asian nations—introduced a five-point consensus in April 2021. The plan called for an immediate ceasefire, humanitarian aid, dialogue among all parties, the appointment of a special envoy, and the envoy's access to Myanmar. Malaysia played a key role in drafting this agreement.
