Part 2/12:
Many perceive Singapore as an affluent city-state where nobody should go hungry. Yet, recent data challenge this perception. A United Nations study from 2016 to 2018 indicated that 4 out of every 100 Singaporeans faced moderate to severe food insecurity—a situation where they lack access to sufficient, nutritious food. This affects roughly 140,000 people, enough to fill two and a half national stadiums.
Associate Professor John Donaldson, an expert on poverty, emphasizes the poignant reality: "In this prosperous society, many go to bed worried about their next meal." Poverty lines, set at a household income of just under $2,000 per month, reveal how tight budgets are—leaving less than five dollars for a day's worth of meals for many families.
