Bikers like Harvey Santiago have taken personal initiatives, biking along the highway with banners to draw attention to the trees' significance. Studies indicate that these trees can absorb over half an Olympic-sized swimming pool of rainwater annually and sequester the carbon equivalent of over 200 flights from London to New York for each tree. Coalition efforts, including a legal case, aim to save these remnants of nature, some of which could be between 40 and 70 years old and survivors of past disasters, including the 1991 volcanic eruption.
