The progression, however, remained fragile. Myanmar experienced internal contradictions: a military institution that enshrined itself as a constitutional gatekeeper, ethnic minority conflicts, and political maneuvering by civilian leaders. The 2020 elections, which returned the NLD to power with a substantial majority, intensified military fears of losing influence, further cementing their perception that empowerment of civilian entities threatened the country's stability.
