Part 2/5:

Floodplains play a crucial role in the health of aquatic ecosystems. When rivers overflow naturally, they deposit sediment onto these floodplain areas, replenishing nutrients and supporting diverse habitats. However, the construction of dikes and other barriers prevents water from reaching these floodplains. While this may seem like a straightforward solution to prevent flooding, it disrupts a natural process that sustains the ecosystem.

By stopping the water's natural flow, we inadvertently halt the process of sediment deposition. This sediment is vital for maintaining fertile floodplain soils and supporting plant and animal life. As a result, the ecological functions of floodplains become compromised, leading to a decline in biodiversity over time.
