Barriers and Their Impact on Wildlife Movement
Another significant issue arises from the physical barriers created by flood control structures. These barriers impede the movement of species, such as fish and amphibians, that rely on migrating between different habitats for feeding, spawning, and breeding.
For many aquatic species, the cycle depends on seamless movement between upstream and downstream environments. When barriers restrict this movement, it can disrupt their life cycles, reducing reproductive success and eventually leading to population declines or even local extinctions.
