Chinese students have historically played an essential role in U.S. higher education. They often cover their full tuition, effectively subsidizing American peers. Post-2008, following the financial crisis, universities actively recruited Chinese students to compensate for declining state funding. Between 2008 and 2018, the number of Chinese students in the U.S. quadrupled, constituting a significant part of the international student body and generating billions in revenue.
