Despite the relative improvements, Hassan's dream of becoming a doctor remained elusive because of legal restrictions on refugees' access to education in Malaysia, where he eventually arrived in 2016.
A New Life in Malaysia—Hope and Disappointment
Hassan’s first months in Malaysia were filled with hope. Staying with a fellow Rohingya family in Ampang, Kuala Lumpur, he felt a newfound freedom and the chance to study without fear. His enthusiasm was palpable; he excelled in school, ranking at the top of his class. Yet, the harsh realities of being a refugee soon set in again.
