In Malaysia, refugees like Hassan are not granted access to government schools, and private higher education is prohibitively expensive. Hassan’s dreams of studying medicine faded as he realized the impossibility of formally pursuing his goal in Malaysia. The barriers left him feeling caged, unable to move freely with a proper legal status or passport, and stripped of many basic rights.
A Community-Focused Response: Education and Advocacy
Despite the setbacks, Hassan refused to give up. He took matters into his own hands by establishing a school for Rohingya children in Malaysia, giving them a chance for education where none officially existed. Even while debt-burdened, he was driven by the conviction that knowledge could be a pathway to change.
